Lakewood Public Art Task Force Moving Forward, Hosting First Public Forum

May 19, 2016

Public art has the ability to provide aesthetic beauty; educate and inspire; stimulate commerce and increase real estate values; build better citizens; provide for cultural interpretation; and to increase tourism and provide other benefits.

With this in mind, the city of Lakewood sought to further explore the development of a public art plan for the city by establishing the resident-driven, seven-member Public Art Task Force in late-2015.

The Task Force has already begun its work.

The seven-member group’s main objective is to research and develop a citywide public art strategy and process and present their findings to council. There is a large artist community in Lakewood from which the Public Art Task Force would like to engage as part of their process.

Please consider joining the Public Art Task Force for a roundtable discussion, some interactive public art mapping and socializing. The Artists Forum on Public Art in Lakewood event is slated to take place at Mahall’s at 6 p.m. May 24.

“This group has the opportunity to add beauty to our shared spaces and declare the worth of those places within our shared cultures,” said Jason Russell, city planner.
