This summer, the Lakewood Police Department is partnering with the University Hospitals Safe Kids/Safe Community coalition and local businesses to launch the “Caught Being Safe” Helmet Reward Program. The initiative is designed to encourage bicycle safety among children in the community by rewarding those who wear helmets.
Throughout the summer months, Lakewood neighborhood police officers will be on the lookout for children practicing safe riding habits. Children spotted wearing a helmet will be rewarded with a safe-riding sticker, a reward card, and a coupon for a free treat at a participating local business.
In addition to rewarding safe habits, the Lakewood Police Department is committed to ensuring every child has access to proper safety gear. Neighborhood officers will carry specialized contact cards to distribute if they encounter a child riding without a helmet. Parents can use the information on the card to request a free helmet.
The Lakewood Police Department also maintains a supply of various-sized helmets available to any resident in need, completely free of charge while supplies last. Residents interested in obtaining a helmet can reach out directly to a Lakewood neighborhood police officer for assistance.
