A Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, also known as a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk Beacon or HAWK Signal, is a traffic control device that provides pedestrians with a mid-block crossing point in high-traffic areas that do not meet the requirements for standard traffic signals.
Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons were approved by the Federal Highway Administration in 2009 with their inclusion in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
The City of Lakewood currently is home to three Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons in the following locations:
You can find instructions for proper operation for both drivers and pedestrians below.
Vehicles should proceed with caution through the crossing at the posted speed.
Pedestrians will see a “Don’t Walk” orange hand symbol. Press button to begin the signal sequence.
Indicates that the signal has been activated. Approaching vehicles should prepare to stop.
Signal is activated, but the “Don’t Walk” signal is still displayed. Pedestrians must wait for the walk signal to cross.
When a solid yellow is displayed, vehicles must stop at the stop line if it is safe to do so.
The signal will change shortly. Pedestrians should continue to wait until the Walk symbol is illuminated.
All vehicle traffic must stop at the stop line.
As the solid red lights are now showing to vehicles, pedestrians may proceed to cross the road with caution.
If pedestrians are finished crossing the road, stopped vehicle traffic may proceed through the crossing.
Approaching vehicles must stop at a flashing red signal and may then proceed if the crosswalk is clear.
Pedestrians see a flashing “Don’t Walk” hand with a countdown timer indicating how much time is left to cross the street. Newly arriving pedestrians should not begin to cross the road at this time.
Vehicles may once again proceed with caution through the crossing at the posted speed.
Pedestrians will again see a “Don’t Walk” orange hand symbol. Press the button to begin the signal sequence.
