Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons

Overview

A Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, also known as a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk Beacon or HAWK Signal, is a traffic control device that provides pedestrians with a mid-block crossing point in high-traffic areas that do not meet the requirements for standard traffic signals.

Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons were approved by the Federal Highway Administration in 2009 with their inclusion in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

The City of Lakewood currently is home to three Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons in the following locations:

  • Madison Ave. at Clarence Ave.
  • Detroit Ave. at Manor Park Ave.
  • Madison Ave. at Arthur Ave.

Walk Sign Illuminated

As the solid red lights are now showing to vehicles, pedestrians may proceed to cross the road with caution.

Alternating Flashing Red Lights

If pedestrians are finished crossing the road, stopped vehicle traffic may proceed through the crossing.

Approaching vehicles must stop at a flashing red signal and may then proceed if the crosswalk is clear.

Finish Crossing

Pedestrians see a flashing “Don’t Walk” hand with a countdown timer indicating how much time is left to cross the street. Newly arriving pedestrians should not begin to cross the road at this time.
